Zanzibar enjoys a tropical climate with two rainy seasons and two dry seasons. But the "best" time depends entirely on what you want to do. Yasir khamis a lifelong resident and travel writer, breaks down the island's weather patterns, crowd levels, and the ideal months for every kind of trip.

Peak Season: June to October

These are the coolest and driest months, with low humidity and calm seas. It's the perfect time for beach holidays, snorkelling, and diving. The island is busiest, especially in August. Book your SpiceWheels car well in advance. Roads are in excellent condition.

Short Rains: November to December

Brief afternoon showers, but still plenty of sunshine. The landscape turns lush and green. Fewer tourists mean more space on the beaches and better deals on accommodation. It's a great time for cultural tours and spice farm visits.

Peak Heat: January to February

The hottest months, with temperatures often exceeding 35°C. The sea is warm and calm excellent for diving and snorkelling. This is also festival season, with Sauti za Busara (music festival) in February. Book early if you plan to attend.

Long Rains: March to May

Heavy downpours are common, especially in April. Some roads become muddy and difficult to navigate a 4x4 is highly recommended. Many beachfront hotels close for renovation. However, this is the greenest time of year, and you'll have the island almost to yourself. If you don't mind the rain, you can find incredible deals.

Best Time for Diving

Visibility is best from January to February and again from June to October. Mnemba Atoll and the south coast reefs are outstanding during these months.
